Modern consumer paints manufactured for residential use do not contain lead, as the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission enacted a federal ban on lead-based paints for residential properties in 1978. However, legacy lead paint remains deeply layered beneath newer coats of paint in millions of older homes, schools, and commercial structures built prior to the ban.
