Do I need to sand after Zinsser 123? You generally do not need to sand after Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer for most jobs, as it is designed to provide good adhesion without sanding on many surfaces including glossy, but light sanding can improve smoothness and adhesion for best finish. Zinsser 1-2-3 adheres well to surfaces like previously painted walls, wood, masonry, metal, and even glossy surfaces without extensive sanding, which is one of its benefits. However, if surface is very glossy, has imperfections, drips, or raised grain, light sanding with fine 220 grit sandpaper after primer dries for 1 hour can smooth surface and improve topcoat adhesion and appearance. For best professional finish on trim or cabinets, sanding after primer is recommended to knock down texture and ensure smooth topcoat. If you are priming drywall or already sanded wood, sanding after primer is optional. Always remove sanding dust before topcoating. So not required for adhesion in most cases, but recommended for smoothness and for very glossy or imperfect surfaces to achieve better final look and durability.
