The mascot of the Colorado Avalanche is Bernie, a friendly St. Bernard dog who serves as the energetic ambassador for the franchise during home games at Ball Arena and various community events. The choice of a St. Bernard pays homage to the iconic rescue dogs traditionally associated with the snowy, mountainous terrain of the Swiss Alps, which aligns perfectly with the winter theme, alpine climate, and imagery evoked by the name Avalanche. St. Bernards are universally recognized as gentle giants capable of navigating harsh winter weather and deep snowdrifts, making them a fitting symbolic fit for a hockey team representing the Rocky Mountain region. Bernie engages fans of all ages with playful antics, comedic skits, and high-energy entertainment, bridging the thematic gap between winter mountain survival and lighthearted family sports entertainment.
