The most intense and historic rival of the Colorado Avalanche is the Detroit Red Wings, stemming from one of the most vicious, star-studded, and competitive feuds in modern sports history. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, both organizations dominated the Western Conference, meeting in grueling postseason series filled with high-stakes tension, physical battles, and an infamous on-ice brawl that solidified mutual animosity between players like Patrick Roy, Claude Lemieux, and Detroit's legendary roster. Additionally, the Avalanche share spirited divisional rivalries with teams like the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild, but nothing matches the historic fire and deep-seated competitive hatred of the classic Avalanche-Red Wings rivalry.
