A leak originating from the top edge or upper seam of a water heater is usually caused by a compromised connection at the cold water inlet or hot water outlet nipples, or a failing gasket beneath the top mounting plate. In many cases, condensation or a weeping temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve running down the side creates the illusion of a top seam leak. Fortunately, top leaks are typically external plumbing issues that can be repaired without replacing the entire tank. Verification: Dry the area completely and observe fittings with paper towels.
