A water heater can catastrophically rupture or "explode" due to extreme, unmanaged thermal pressure and steam generation combined with a failed safety valve. If the thermostat malfunctions and heats water continuously past boiling point, or if thermal expansion creates massive pressure exceeding 150 psi, the tank will burst violently if the Temperature and Pressure (T&P) relief valve fails to open and discharge the excess pressure. Verification: Test your T&P relief valve annually to ensure the discharge lever operates freely.
