Hearing a hammering or banging sound from your water heater is usually caused by hydraulic shock (water hammer) entering the plumbing lines or thermal expansion. When fast-closing valves or appliances shut off abruptly near the water heater, shock waves travel through the pipes and vibrate the tank shell. Additionally, long runs of copper or PEX supply pipes expanding against wooden framing studs during heavy hot water heating cycles can produce a distinct hammering noise. Verification: Install water hammer arrestors and secure loose pipe straps to eliminate vibration.
