When a water heater sounds like a roaring jet engine, it is usually caused by severe scale and mineral sediment buildup boiling rapidly at the bottom of the tank. As hard water minerals form a thick crust over the heating elements or burner, pockets of water become trapped underneath and boil furiously into high-pressure steam. As steam bubbles burst upward through the dense mineral layer, they generate an extremely loud roaring sound. Verification: Flush your water heater tank immediately to clear out the accumulated sediment and quiet the unit.
