A garbage disposal motor that turns on and spins normally but fails to grind food waste is usually caused by feeding food scraps too fast, overloading the grinding chamber, or worn impellers that cannot swing outward. If the spinning impellers (lugs) are rusted or stuck in place, they cannot fling food outward against the stationary shredder ring to pulverize it. Alternatively, fibrous or sticky waste can create a cushion that prevents teeth from making contact. Verification: Feed food scraps in small quantities with a continuous stream of cold water and check that waste evacuates cleanly.
