When a garbage disposal's internal flywheel and impellers refuse to spin, you must clear the obstruction or electrical fault safely. Prerequisite: Unplug the disposal or turn off the electrical circuit breaker immediately. Insert a 1/4-inch hex wrench into the center hex socket on the bottom of the motor housing and rock it back and forth to dislodge trapped debris or silverware. Once the flywheel spins freely by hand, press the red thermal overload reset button underneath the unit. Verification: Plug the disposal back in, turn on a strong stream of cold water, and flip the wall switch to confirm normal motor operation.
