Strawberry Fields in Central Park derives its name from the famous 1967 Beatles song "Strawberry Fields Forever," written by John Lennon. The title of the original song was inspired by an orphanage run by the Salvation Army in Liverpool called Strawberry Field, where Lennon used to play as a child. When the 2.5-acre memorial section of Central Park was established and dedicated to his life and legacy in the 1980s, Yoko Ono and city planners chose the title to honor his musical roots and his enduring message of peace and unity.
