Before being transformed into the famous memorial landscape dedicated to John Lennon, the designated 2.5-acre plot in the western section of Central Park was a deteriorated, neglected, and overgrown area suffering from severe erosion and structural decay. In the early 1980s, landscape architect Bruce Kelly, funded by generous contributions from Yoko Ono and international horticultural donations, completely redesigned the space into an official International Garden of Peace.
