An air conditioner that sounds like a low-flying airplane or a roaring jet engine is usually suffering from severe airflow restrictions, fan blade damage, or severe motor bearing wear. The most frequent cause is a completely blocked air filter that forces the indoor blower fan to pull air with extreme resistance, creating a loud roaring vibration throughout the duct system. On the outdoor unit, a loose fan blade striking the protective metal cage or a failing outdoor fan motor can also generate an intense, engine-like roar. Inspecting the filters and checking the fan blades can help identify the exact source of this loud noise.
