A properly functioning, healthy air conditioner unit should produce a consistent, unobtrusive background sound profile that most homeowners easily tune out. Inside the home, a normal system emits a smooth, uniform rushing sound of air coming out of the supply registers, accompanied by a very faint, muffled hum from the indoor blower compartment. Outside your home, the condenser unit should sound like a steady, low-pitched mechanical hum running concurrently with the smooth, whirring sound of the top exhaust fan pushing air upward. There should be no abrupt changes in tone, harsh metallic screeching, loud clanking, or violent vibrations coming from either the indoor or outdoor components at any point during its cooling cycle.
