Nurses and obstetricians instruct mothers not to push during labor when the cervix is not yet fully dilated (10 centimeters). Pushing prematurely before complete dilation can cause the cervix to swell, tear, or become bruised, which actually obstructs the baby's progress and prolongs labor. Additionally, medical staff may tell you to stop pushing briefly during the final crowning stage to allow the perineal tissues to stretch slowly and safely, which significantly minimizes the risk of severe tearing.
