While they are part of the exact same continuous medical event, labor and giving birth are not technically identical. Labor is the grueling physical process—consisting of contractions, cervical effacement, and dilation—that prepares the body to expel the fetus. Giving birth (or delivery) encompasses the actual expulsion or surgical removal of the baby and placenta. Labor is the prolonged exertion phase that leads directly into the ultimate act of giving birth.
