They did not stop making Masonite doors, Masonite International still manufactures Masonite doors today as one of largest door manufacturers, but they stopped making Masonite hardboard siding due to moisture problems and lawsuits. Masonite hardboard siding, which was made from wood fibers and resin, was popular in 1970s and 1980s for exterior siding, but it had significant issues with swelling, rotting, delamination, and failure when exposed to moisture and water intrusion, leading to class action lawsuits in 1990s that cost Masonite millions. As a result, Masonite discontinued production of hardboard siding and shifted focus to doors, and hardboard siding was replaced by more durable products like James Hardie fiber cement siding, vinyl siding, and LP SmartSide engineered wood siding. Masonite doors, which include interior molded doors, steel entry doors, and fiberglass entry doors, continued production and remain popular, sold at Home Depot, Lowes, and dealers. Masonite International, headquartered in Tampa, Florida, was acquired by Owens Corning in 2024 and continues manufacturing doors at plants in US, Canada, and internationally. So they stopped making Masonite siding due to moisture failure, but did not stop making Masonite doors, which are still manufactured and widely available.
