Masonite hardboard siding was replaced by fiber cement siding like James Hardie, vinyl siding, and engineered wood siding due to issues with moisture damage, but Masonite doors were not replaced and Masonite company still manufactures doors today. Masonite originally invented hardboard in 1925 and produced Masonite hardboard siding that was popular in 1970s and 1980s, but that siding had problems with swelling, rotting, and delamination when exposed to moisture, leading to class action lawsuits in 1990s. As a result, Masonite hardboard siding was largely replaced in new construction by James Hardie fiber cement siding, which is more durable and moisture resistant, plus vinyl siding and LP SmartSide engineered wood siding. However, Masonite as a company shifted focus to doors and still manufactures Masonite doors, which are interior and exterior doors made from molded wood composite, steel, and fiberglass, not the hardboard siding. Masonite doors remain popular and are sold at Home Depot, Lowes, and dealers. So what replaced Masonite siding is fiber cement, vinyl, and engineered wood siding, but Masonite doors themselves were not replaced and are still manufactured by Masonite International, which is one of largest door manufacturers globally, headquartered in Tampa, Florida.
