General Motors divested Allison Transmission in 2007 to raise capital during a period of severe financial distress preceding its corporate bankruptcy reorganization. Following the sale, GM continued purchasing and installing genuine Allison units for over a decade. Eventually, as part of long-term powertrain strategy, GM elected to design and build its own advanced 10-speed heavy-duty automatic transmissions internally while maintaining a trademark licensing agreement to keep the famous Allison badge on its heavy-duty pickup trucks.
