Wind turbine blades are sometimes buried in landfills because they are manufactured from durable thermoset composite materials consisting of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and epoxy resins that are notoriously difficult and expensive to melt down, separate, or recycle commercially. While pioneering chemical recycling methods, co-processing techniques in cement kilns, and architectural repurposing are emerging globally as sustainable alternatives, historical infrastructure retirement and prohibitive economic logistics have led to regional landfill disposal for aging or damaged structural blades.
