GAF, which is North America's largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer officially known as GAF Materials Corporation, is owned by Standard Industries, which is a privately held global industrial company. Standard Industries is headquartered in New York City and is owned by the family of Samuel J. Heyman, with his children and heirs controlling the company through a family holding structure. GAF was originally part of General Aniline and Film Corporation, which after World War II went through many ownership changes, and in 1983 it was acquired by Samuel Heyman, a corporate raider and businessman, who built it into a major building materials company. In 2018, Standard Industries was formed as the parent company to house GAF and other building materials companies including BMI Group in Europe, Siplast, and GAF Energy which makes solar roofing. Standard Industries is privately held, not publicly traded, and is controlled by the Heyman family and its investment arm Standard Investments. The current CEO of GAF is John Altmeyer, who reports to Standard Industries leadership. GAF operates dozens of manufacturing plants across the US and is valued at many billions of dollars, with Standard Industries overall having over 20 billion dollars in revenue. So GAF is not publicly owned like many corporations, it is privately owned by Standard Industries and the Heyman family, who have owned it for over 40 years.
