The parent company of GROHE is Lixil Corporation, a large Japanese building materials and housing equipment company. Lixil acquired GROHE in 2014 in a major deal. The history is that GROHE was founded in 1936 in Germany by Friedrich Grohe as part of Hans Grohe's company. For decades it was family-owned. In 1999, GROHE was acquired by private equity firms BC Partners and later TPG and DLJ Merchant Banking. In 2014, Lixil Group, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, along with the Development Bank of Japan, acquired GROHE Group for approximately $4.1 billion euros, making it one of the largest acquisitions of a German company by a Japanese company. Lixil is a global conglomerate that owns many well-known bathroom and housing brands, including American Standard, which is the largest plumbing brand in North America, Inax, which is a Japanese tile and sanitary ware brand, and Permasteelisa, a curtain wall company. Under Lixil ownership, GROHE has retained its German headquarters in Düsseldorf, its German engineering and design centers, and its brand identity as a premium German brand. Lixil has invested heavily in GROHE's sustainability initiatives and global expansion. So while GROHE is still marketed as a German brand with German engineering, its ultimate parent company since 2014 is Lixil Corporation of Japan.
