Sanford Limited was founded by Albert Sanford, an English mariner who arrived in New Zealand in 1864. He began his enterprise as a sole fisherman catching snapper in the Hauraki Gulf, gradually expanded his retail and wholesale fish operations in Auckland, and officially incorporated the business as a limited liability company in 1904.
