The lowland longjaw galaxias (Galaxias cobitinis) is widely considered New Zealand's rarest and most threatened freshwater fish species. Endemic to a few isolated, spring-fed streams within the Otago and Mackenzie Basin regions of the South Island, this tiny, pencil-thin native fish faces severe conservation risks due to habitat degradation, agricultural sedimentation, and predation by introduced trout species.
