The first printing press in India was established at the Jesuit St. Paul's College in Old Goa, arriving by ship and commencing operations in 1556. The primary motivation behind introducing this pioneering press was to aid Christian missionary work and religious education across the region. One of the earliest and most historically significant books printed on this press was Catecismo da Doutrina Cristã, authored by St. Francis Xavier. This monumental milestone marked the beginning of typography and mechanized publishing in South Asia, long before commercial printing spread to British-administered presidency towns like Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta.
