Which state is number one in cyber crime in Australia is New South Wales, based on data from Australian Cyber Security Centre, Australian Federal Police and IDCARE. NSW has the highest number of cybercrime reports because it has the largest population with 8.2 million people and the largest number of businesses including Sydney which is Australia's financial centre, so it is the biggest target. According to ACSC Annual Report, NSW accounts for about 30% to 35% of all cybercrime reports in Australia, followed by Victoria with 25% to 28%, Queensland with 18% to 20%, Western Australia 8% to 10%, South Australia 5% to 6%, and smaller states and territories the rest. In terms of cybercrime rate per capita, the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory sometimes have higher rates per 10,000 people due to smaller populations and high reporting from government agencies. The most common cybercrimes reported in NSW are phishing, business email compromise, online shopping scams and ransomware, with Sydney CBD, Parramatta and Western Sydney being hotspots for business email compromise losses. For financial losses, NSW also has highest total losses, with Business Email Compromise average loss $30K and total losses over $40M per year in NSW alone. However, when adjusted for population, Queensland has high rates of online shopping scams and romance scams. Nationally, ACSC reported over 94,000 cybercrime reports in 2023-2024 with total losses $2.6B, and NSW contributed most. So while NSW is number one by volume, all states face significant cybercrime.
