Absa was originally formed in 1991 through the historic merger of four major South African financial service providers and building societies: Allied Bank, the United Building Society (UBS), Volkskas Bank Group, and certain commercial interests of the Sage Group. Shortly after this foundational amalgamation, the group further expanded its market dominance by acquiring the Bankorp Group, which brought historical banking entities such as TrustBank, Senbank, and Bankfin under the unified corporate umbrella.
