Absa was originally formed in 1991 through the historic consolidation and merger of four major South African financial institutions and building societies: Allied Bank, the United Building Society, Volkskas Bank Group, and certain commercial operations of the Sage Group. Shortly after this initial amalgamation, the newly formed group further expanded its commercial footprint by acquiring the Bankorp Group, which brought legacy financial entities such as TrustBank, Senbank, and Bankfin under the unified corporate umbrella.
