Most standard residential refrigerator and air conditioning compressors do not feature a physical, external "reset button" that you can press to restart them after a fault. Instead, compressor protection is handled automatically by an internal overload relay switch mounted directly to the side of the compressor housing inside the electrical terminal box. This overload relay is designed to trip and open the electrical circuit automatically if the compressor motor overheats or draws excessive current, and it will reset itself automatically once the motor cools down, provided the underlying mechanical or electrical fault is resolved. You can troubleshoot power delivery using a multimeter. You can verify compressor status when checking continuity across the overload relay confirms whether the safety switch has reset successfully or requires a replacement part.
