A Cutler-Hammer breaker is a brand of low voltage molded case circuit breaker designed for residential and light commercial electrical distribution, now sold under the Eaton brand. Cutler-Hammer made two main residential types that are still in production. The first is Type BR, which is a one inch wide breaker with a black handle, used in BR load centers that are common in tract homes and apartments. BR breakers are available in single pole and double pole, from 15 to 100 amps, and include standard, GFCI, AFCI, and dual function versions. The second is Type CH, which is a premium 3/4 inch wide breaker with a tan handle and a distinctive hook that grips the bus bar more securely, used in CH load centers favored for higher end homes. CH breakers also come in standard, GFCI, and AFCI versions. Both types are thermal magnetic breakers, meaning they trip on overload via a bimetallic strip and on short circuit via a magnetic element. Cutler-Hammer also made commercial and industrial breakers like bolt-on types and motor circuit protectors. Today, these same physical designs are manufactured by Eaton and labeled Eaton BR and Eaton CH, maintaining the same form factor and backward compatibility with old Cutler-Hammer panels.
