For standard kitchen backsplashes located in dry areas away from direct heavy moisture, standard moisture-resistant drywall or greenboard is typically adequate and easiest to install. However, if your backsplash is installed directly behind a sink, range, or in an area subject to heavy steam and water exposure, water-resistant cement board or fiber-cement backer board is considered the absolute best choice. These cement-based substrates provide superior dimensional stability, prevent mold and mildew growth, and will not warp, swell, or degrade even if moisture manages to penetrate through porous grout or caulk lines over time.
