Certain kitchen countertop materials and colorways that were immensely popular in past decades are now considered outdated by contemporary interior design standards. Prominent examples include speckled beige or pink-toned laminate countertops that mimic low-end stone, high-contrast black-and-white checkered solid surfaces, and heavily speckled multi-colored granite slabs featuring loud, aggressive flecks of burgundy, dark green, or gold. Furthermore, shiny glossy finishes with harsh artificial sparkles or synthetic solid surfaces in overly bright primary colors have fallen out of favor. Today's design preferences lean strongly toward soft, organic neutrals, subtle gray veining, warm soapstone hues, and matte finishes that emulate natural stone.
