Hailstones typically begin causing noticeable physical dents, clear-coat abrasions, and cosmetic damage to an automobile when they reach one inch in diameter (roughly the size of a quarter) or larger. However, exceptionally severe storms producing golf-ball-sized (1.75 inches) or baseball-sized (2.75 inches) hailstones can shatter windshield glass, crack side windows, puncture sheet metal hoods and roofs, and inflict thousands of dollars in catastrophic structural and cosmetic damage to vehicles parked outdoors without protective coverage.
