In simple, everyday language, hail is a type of severe weather where frozen balls or lumps of ice fall from the sky during thunderstorms. It forms when strong upward currents of wind inside storm clouds carry raindrops high into freezing upper regions where they turn into ice. As they collect more moisture and freeze into larger layers, they eventually become too heavy for the wind to support and crash down to the ground, often causing dents in cars and damage to roofs.
