You should not throw several categories of waste into an InSinkErator garbage disposal, even though the marketing makes it seem like it can handle anything, because certain items cause jams, clogs, damage, or safety hazards. First, never put grease, oil, or fat down the disposal. Even with cold water, grease solidifies in pipes and causes severe blockages. Pour it into a container and throw it away. Second, avoid fibrous vegetables like celery, artichokes, asparagus, corn husks, and banana peels. The long stringy fibers wrap around the grinding impellers and cause jams. Third, avoid starchy foods like potato peels, pasta, rice, and beans in large quantities. They swell with water and form a thick paste that clogs drains. Fourth, do not put hard items like bones, other than small fish bones, fruit pits, oyster shells, or glass, as they can damage the grinding plates and chamber. Fifth, avoid coffee grounds in large amounts, as they accumulate and cause sludgy clogs. Sixth, never put non-food items like sponges, rubber bands, or plastic. Seventh, avoid harsh chemicals and drain cleaners, which corrode seals. Also avoid egg shells in excess, as the membrane can wrap around impellers. Small amounts of most foods are okay if fed gradually with plenty of cold water running.
