To reset the garbage disposal on an InSinkErator, you are using the built-in overload protector that trips when the disposal jams, overheats, or draws too much current to protect the motor from burning out. This is a very simple procedure that takes less than a minute. First, turn off the disposal. If it is a wall switch model, turn the switch off. If it is a batch feed, remove the stopper. Also turn off power at the breaker for safety if you need to put your hand near the bottom. Look under the disposal at the very bottom of the unit. You will see a small red or black button, usually about a quarter inch square, that has popped out. This is the reset button. Press it firmly in until it clicks and stays in. If it does not stay in, wait 5 to 10 minutes for the motor to cool down and try again, as the thermal protector needs to cool before resetting. After resetting, turn on cold water and turn the disposal back on. If it hums but does not spin, it is still jammed. Turn it off again and use the jam-buster wrench that came with the disposal, inserting it into the hex socket on the bottom and working it back and forth to free the jam. Then press reset again. If the reset button keeps popping out repeatedly, there is a persistent jam or motor failure.
