Depending on the botanical classification and geographic region, cedar trees are often known by alternative names, though true cedars belong strictly to the genus Cedrus, such as the Cedrus libani or Deodar cedar. However, the common name "cedar" is frequently applied colloquially to many unrelated conifer species that share similar aromatic wood or scale-like foliage, such as Western Red Cedars, Eastern Redcedars, and White Cedars, which are technically classified botanically as cypresses or pines. Additionally, regional terms like arborvitae or juniper are frequently used interchangeably in everyday landscaping conversation to describe trees commonly referred to as cedars.
