When installing or replacing a garbage disposal sink flange assembly, you should use traditional plumber's putty to create a watertight seal between the upper sink drain opening and the metal mounting flange. For threaded PVC drain pipes and slip-joint connections beneath the disposal, no liquid sealant or tape is needed because rubber gaskets create the primary seal. If silicone sealant is used instead of plumber's putty on the sink flange, it should be a 100% waterproof sanitary grade. Verification: Inspect the upper sink flange and drain pipes for water leaks while filling and draining the sink basin.
