What is worse than a hornet depends on context, whether you mean sting pain, danger, or nuisance, but several insects and situations are considered worse than a hornet sting. In terms of sting pain, insects with worse stings include bullet ant, whose sting is rated highest on Schmidt sting pain index as pure, intense pain lasting hours, tarantula hawk wasp with blinding pain that incapacitates for minutes, and Asian giant hornet which is itself a hornet but larger and more venomous than European or bald-faced hornets, with more potent venom that can cause more severe reactions and deaths in Asia. Warrior wasp sting is also considered worse. In terms of danger, Africanized honeybees, called killer bees, are worse than hornets because they defend in much larger numbers and chase farther, up to hundreds of meters, and can cause more stings. In terms of allergy risk, any sting can be worse if you are allergic and develop anaphylaxis. In terms of infestation, having yellow jacket nest inside wall cavity can be worse than hornet nest in tree because it is harder to remove and causes more indoor encounters. For people, multiple hornet stings from disturbed colony are worse than single sting due to venom load and alarm pheromone attracting more hornets. So worse than hornet includes more painful stings like bullet ant and tarantula hawk, more aggressive colony defense like Africanized bees, and situations with multiple stings or allergic reaction.
