What is the SMART Recovery method is a science-based, self-empowering approach to recovery from addictive behaviors including substance use and other compulsive activities. SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, founded in 1994 as alternative to 12-step programs. Unlike AA which emphasizes powerlessness and spiritual surrender, SMART emphasizes self-empowerment and self-reliance using cognitive behavioral therapy CBT and motivational interviewing tools. Its 4-Point Program includes building and maintaining motivation to change, coping with urges and cravings, managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that lead to addiction, and living a balanced life and maintaining lifestyle. Methods include tools like cost-benefit analysis, ABC model for understanding triggers, DISARM for destructive thoughts, urge surfing, and lifestyle balance wheel. Meetings are facilitated by trained volunteers, focus on present and future rather than past, teach practical skills, encourage self-directed change, and are open to anyone. SMART is secular, evidence-based, and supports abstinence or moderation depending on individual goals, and offers in-person and online meetings globally.
