Graves' disease is widely considered the sister or counterpart autoimmune disorder to Hashimoto's disease, as both are the two most common autoimmune conditions affecting the thyroid gland. However, while Hashimoto's results in an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) due to immune destruction, Graves' disease causes an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) because stimulating antibodies force the gland to produce excessive amounts of hormones. Both conditions stem from immune system malfunctions and share genetic risk factors, yet they produce opposite physiological effects on the body's metabolism.
