Arkansas Post holds the distinguished title of being the oldest European settlement and town in the state of Arkansas, having been originally established in 1686 by the French explorer Henri de Tonti as a trading post along the lower Arkansas River. Conceived as a strategic frontier outpost to facilitate trade with local Quapaw Native American tribes and secure French territorial claims in the Mississippi River basin, the settlement survived through subsequent colonial rivalries, the American Revolution, and territorial expansion. Although subsequent floods and historical shifts reduced its modern footprint, the site is preserved as a national memorial commemorating its rich pioneer heritage.
