The oldest surviving things in York date back to the Roman occupation of Eboracum, which began around 71 AD. Among the most prominent ancient structures are portions of the Roman Multangular Tower and foundational stone walls located within the Museum Gardens, which have stood for nearly two thousand years. While earlier prehistoric archaeological artifacts discovered in the surrounding Yorkshire region date back tens of thousands of years, these Roman fortifications remain the most famous visible remnants of antiquity in the city.
