York is definitively an English city, located in the county of North Yorkshire in the northern region of England. Geographically, culturally, and administratively, it is situated well south of the Scottish border, approximately two hundred miles north of London. While its rich, turbulent history includes periods of Roman governance, Anglo-Saxon rule, and Viking occupation under the Kingdom of Jórvík, modern York has belonged to England for centuries and remains one of the country's most celebrated historic urban centers.
