The most common problem with dryers in general, regardless of brand, is dryer not heating or taking too long to dry clothes, which accounts for over 50 percent of all dryer service calls. This is almost always caused by restricted airflow rather than a failed part. When lint accumulates in the lint filter, lint housing, flexible transition duct behind the dryer, wall duct, or exterior vent flap, hot moist air cannot escape, so drying times double and clothes remain damp. Modern dryers have duct blockage sensors that show d80, d90, d95 or clean filter warnings. This poor airflow then causes overheating that blows the thermal fuse, burns out the heating element in electric dryers, or damages gas valve coils and igniters in gas dryers, resulting in a dryer that tumbles but produces no heat. The second most common problem is mechanical wear: broken drum belts, worn idler pulleys, and drum rollers that cause squealing, thumping, squeaking, or the drum not turning at all after 5 to 8 years. Third is door or lid switch failure where the dryer will not start because it thinks the door is open. Fourth is moisture sensor failure where fabric softener residue coats the sensor bars and causes early shutoff. Regular vent cleaning annually and lint filter cleaning before every load prevents most dryer problems.
