Mechanics and Farmers Bank traces its historic roots back to its founding in 1907 in Durham, North Carolina, established during the Jim Crow era by prominent African American leaders including Aaron Moore, John Merrick, and Charles C. Spaulding. Created to provide financial services, home mortgages, and business loans to Black citizens and entrepreneurs who were largely excluded from white-owned banking institutions, the bank played a monumental role in supporting the growth of Black-owned businesses and residential communities. Through generations of dedicated financial stewardship, M&F Bank expanded its branch network across North Carolina, preserving its legacy as one of the oldest continually operating minority-owned banks in the United States.
