The French word for a butterfly is un papillon (pronounced pah-pee-yohn). It is a masculine noun. Interestingly, the word is also used colloquially in French to describe parking tickets fluttering under windshield wipers (les papillons sur les pare-brise), as well as describing a specific swimming stroke known in English as the butterfly stroke (le papillon).
