The best lubricant to put on a garage door is a silicone-based or lithium-based garage door lubricant that is non-greasy and designed for metal parts, not WD-40 which is solvent not long-term lubricant. For garage door rollers, hinges, tracks, and springs, use silicone spray lubricant or white lithium grease spray that is labeled for garage doors, such as 3-IN-ONE Garage Door Lubricant, WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease, or Blaster Silicone Lubricant. Silicone spray is best for rollers, hinges, and tracks because it does not attract dust and dirt, provides smooth operation, and works in cold temperatures. White lithium grease is best for chain or screw drive opener rail and metal hinges where thicker grease needed. For torsion springs above door, use light silicone spray. Avoid using heavy oil, grease, or WD-40 original formula as they attract dust and can gum up, causing more friction. Do not lubricate tracks heavily, just light spray on rollers and hinges. Lubricate garage door twice a year, spring and fall, by spraying rollers, hinges, springs, and opener chain or screw, then operate door a few times to distribute. Clean tracks with damp cloth before lubricating. Proper lubrication extends opener life, reduces noise, and ensures smooth operation.
