You should not spray regular WD-40 original formula on a garage door chain as long-term lubricant, though WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease or Silicone is acceptable, as regular WD-40 is solvent and degreaser that evaporates quickly and attracts dust, causing more wear. Garage door chain on chain drive openers like Chamberlain and LiftMaster chain drive models needs proper lubrication to reduce friction and extend life, but regular WD-40 is not recommended because it is not a long-term lubricant, it cleans and displaces moisture but evaporates leaving dry chain that wears faster and attracts dirt. Instead, use white lithium grease spray or silicone spray that is designed for garage doors, such as 3-IN-ONE Garage Door Lubricant, WD-40 Specialist White Lithium Grease, or Blaster Garage Door Lubricant. For chain, apply white lithium grease spray along chain while operating door to distribute, wipe excess. For belt drive openers, do not lubricate belt, belt should remain dry. For rollers, hinges, and springs, use silicone spray. Lubricate chain twice a year, spring and fall. So avoid regular WD-40 blue can on garage door chain, use white lithium grease or silicone spray labeled for garage doors for best results and longer chain life.
