Panch Dhuni Tapasya is an intense form of spiritual austerity and ancient yogic penance practiced in Hindu traditions, particularly by wandering ascetics and sadhus. The ritual involves sitting outdoors exposed directly to the blazing elements, surrounded by four blazing fires (dhunis) on the four cardinal directions—east, west, north, and south—while the fifth fierce fire is the blazing sun directly overhead in the sky. Practitioners undertake this rigorous discipline during the hottest summer months to conquer sensory attachments, transcend physical discomfort, achieve supreme mental focus, and burn away karmic impurities through extreme endurance.
